Mr Moet v Mawingo – 2013 Peter Young Stakes Betting

It is shaping up as a tough two horse betting battle for the Peter Young Stakes 2013 at Caulfield Racecourse this Saturday for Blue Diamond Stakes Day with Group 1 winners Mr Moet and Mawingo vying for top spot in the markets.

Due to jump at 2:40pm (AEST) as Caulfield Race 5 the $220,000 Group 2 Carlton Draught Peter Young Stakes (1800m) has drawn a top class field of eight gallopers, the bulk of which are heading towards the $1 million Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on March 9.

The bookies are having a tough time splitting the top two fancies for the Peter Young too with the fight for favouritism currently being won by Mawingo at $3.30 who has the inside running from gate one with ace hoop Craig Williams to ride.

Anthony Cummings’ Tertullian stallion, winner of the Doomben Cup last Brisbane Winter Carnival, resumed at this track on February 9 and finished a very competitive second when defeated only half a length by superstar colt All Too Hard in the CF Orr Stakes over 1400m.

Jumping up to 1800m on Saturday should suit the five-year-old who is current $5 second pick behind Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon in the futures Australian Cup odds.

Just ten cents longer in the Peter Young odds is then rapid market mover Mr Moet at $3.40 who is due to jump from barrier four with Daniel Staeck in the saddle.

Mosayter five-year-old Mr Moet made a name for themselves during the summer back home in WA when the Adam Durrant-trained gelding enjoyed a first-up win over Luckygray in the Group 1 Railway Stakes.

They went on to run second in the Kingston Town Classic before winning the CB Cox Stakes and then second again this time in the Perth Cup.

That excellent form saw connections send them east with an eye on the Melbourne Festival of Racing features and they were competitive first-up in the CF Orr when a close third.

The top two have a notable gap on the rest of the Peter Young Stakes contenders with the third line of betting shared by a trio of horses on $10 with:

  • #4 Budriguez (David Jolly) – Al Maher six-year-old out for their third win on the trot having last been seen scoring a nice win over a decent field in the Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) here on February 9, Craig Williams was aboard then but Brett Prebble is over from Singapore on the weekend and has the mount
  • #4 Foreteller (Chris Waller) – Dansili gelding was fifth in the Carlyon Cup but tipped to improve over more distance, also likes it wet so if there’s rain around expect their odds to firm
  • #6 Éclair Surprise (Phillip Stokes) – Adelaide raider loves it in Melbourne having won at Flemington and Sandown over the 1800m last spring, one a Listed the other a Group 3, looked to keep that stellar form too when a fist-up winner back home over 1400m earlier in the month carrying 62.5kg and drop to 59kg on Saturday

OTI-owned French import Prairie Star ($11) and Carlyon Cup runner-up Invest ($12) then follow closely before Robert Hickmott’s resuming Zipping Classic champ Tanby ($17) rounds out the betting.
