Last year’s Stradbroke Handicap winner Impending...
With the confirmation glamour mare Black Caviar will not run in the 2013 Newmarket Handicap this Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival another Peter Moody-trained sprint star Moment Of Change has hit top spot in the futures odds.
This week Racing Victoria took first acceptances for the $1 million Group 1 Lexus Newmarket Handicap (1200m), set to run at Flemington Racecourse on March 9, with 24 hopefuls remaining in contention.
Predictably 2011 winner Black Caviar was not one of them with her next race instead scheduled as the William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley two weeks after the Newmarket.
Moody is still on track to be well represented in the race however with the former Neville Layt-trained Karuta Queen who debuts for him in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) this Saturday, and the new punters’ pick Moment Of Change.
Winner of the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes last spring, Barley A Moment four-year-old Moment Of Change now occupies the first line of Newmarket Handicap betting at a quote of $3.20.
They are followed in these early futures markets on the first acceptors by two other single figure chances with WA duo Barakey ($4) and Luckygray ($6).
Both are Group 1 winners back home in Perth with the Jim Taylor-trained Barakey having won the Winterbottom last time out back in November and Gino Poletti’s last start Kingston Town Classic champ Lukcygray also having won the 2011 Railway.
Taylor was the original trainer of last year’s Newmarket Handicap winner Hay List and believes Key Business gelding Barakey, undefeated with 11 wins from as many starts to their name thus far, could potentially be the next big thing to come out of Western Australia.
Barakey has their first run outside of Perth in the Oakleigh Plate this weekend, a win in which will see their Newmarket price firm.
Other horses under $20 in the latest Newmarket Handicap odds then include:
- Ortensia ($11) – Smart multiple Group 1 winning mare across the globe (Australia, Dubai and Britain), races first-up here after a failed effort at Haydock Park in September, been working well in trials and behind the scenes and has speed and class as well as a credible first-up record
- Better Than Ready ($12) – Kelly Schweida’s More Than Ready three-year-old from Brisbane is rapidly improving, has had just the one stakes win to date but is tipped for bigger things this time in
- Shamal Wind ($12) – Lightly-raced Dubai filly prepared by Robert Smerdon has won all three of her starts to date including a Listed feature during the Melbourne Cup Carnival, set for an acid test in the Oakleigh this weekend before the rest of her autumn is confirmed
- Spirit Of Boom ($18) – Tony Gollan-trained Queenslander also running in the Oakleigh, resumes there after a nice third to Barakey in the Winterbottom last time out
The results of this Saturday’s Oakleigh Plate on Blue Diamond Day are sure to impact the Newmarket Handicap markets making now the chance to lock in your favourites at the best prices before odds firm.
