A talented eight horse field of stayers has been accepted for the 2013 Peter Young Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse this Saturday with the top-rated acceptor being Anthony Freedman’s Doomben Cup winner Mawingo.
The Tertullian five-year-old resumed racing after an injury-enforced break with a slashing second behind super colt All Too Hard in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) at this track on February 9 and will look to go one better when they drop back in class for the $220,000 Group 2 Carlton Draught Peter Young Stakes (1800m) on Saturday.
Drawn in gate one with Craig Williams retaining the ride, Mawingo is heading towards another more lucrative Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival feature with their eyes firmly on the $1 million Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on March 9.
The latest Australian Cup odds are led by reigning Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon at $3.40 with Mawingo occupying the second line of betting at $5.
Following closely in those futures markets is then Adam Durrant’s Perth raider Mr Moet at $6 who also runs in the Peter Young this weekend.
The Mosayter five-year-old earned their trip East after a super summer back home including their Group 1 Railway Stakes victory and their last start second in the Perth Cup.
They caught the eye in their Melbourne debut when third in the CF Orr just a long neck off runner-up Mawingo, the gelding looking to get the better of them when jumping from gate four with Daniel Staeck in the saddle on Saturday.
The other big player in the Peter Young Stakes this weekend then looks to be the Phillip Stokes-trained Éclair Surprise in barrier two, the Blackfriars five-year-old from Adelaide looking for their fifth consecutive win.
After three wins during the spring, including the Group 3 Eclispe Stakes (1800m) at Sandown, Éclair Surprise resumed with a tight victory at home when carrying 62.5kg earlier this month and they are sure to relish the drop back to 59kg under the weight-for-age conditions of Saturday.
Other notable hopes then include Robert Hickmott’s resuming Zipping Classic winner Tanby, the Chris Waller-trained Foreteller and Al Maher gelding Budriguez who vies for their third win on the trot having last won the Group 3 Carlyon Cup over the mile here on February 9.
The Danny O’Brien-trained French import Prairie Star and Carlyon Cup runner-up Invest then round out the field drawn in gates six and seven respectively.
The Peter Young Stakes results are likely to impact the futures betting for the Australian Cup 2013.
