Fiveandahalfstar Tops Small 2013 Autumn Classic Field

Just eight horses will line up in the Group 2 $220,000 2013 Autumn Classic (1800m) which will take place at Caulfield on Saturday.

Restricted to three-year-olds, the small group is headed by Victoria Derby winner Fiveandahalfstar who is coming off a first-up second in the Autumn Stakes earlier this month.

The Anthony Cummings-trained gelding is likely to be more suited to the extra distance on offer and will be ridden by champion jockey Glen Boss from barrier two.

Third in the Autumn Classic was Victoria Derby runner-up Super Cool and he is also likely to appreciate the longer trip this weekend.

Trainer Mark Kavanagh played down his chances prior to the first-up run and he is expected to take plenty of improvement out of the hit-out.

Facing a step up in class but coming off a last-start win is Cranbourne colt Subiaso who took out a three-year-old BM72 event at Sandown on February 6.

He is one of three last-start winners in the field with Pat Carey’s colt Luck’s A Fortune seen winning on Australia Day at Sale and David Hayes’ Sea Of Choice victorious at Moonee Valley on February 15.

It’s rare for a horse to make their debut over 1800m in a Group 2 race but that is exactly what will happen on Saturday with Kane Harris-trained gelding Must Confess.

The son of Testa Rossa has had three trials to prepare for the tough debut test where he will run from barrier three.

The two other runners making up the Autumn Classic field are South Australian gelding Bit Of A Schiller and Michael Kent-trained colt High Shot.

This Saturday at Caulfield is a bumper program that features three Group 1 races and great odds will be found at
