Torvill is tipped as the three-year-old filly to...
One of the seven Group races on the Caulfield race card this Saturday for Blue Diamond Stakes Day will be the 2013 Angus Armanasco Stakes which is set to run as Race 3 at 1:20pm (AEST).
The first black-type race on the program, the $220,000 Group 2 D’Urban Angus Armanasco Stakes (1400m) has drawn a small but classy final field of seven three-year-old fillies headed by the Robert Smerdon-trained Members Joy.
Drawn in gate four with Glen Boss booked for the ride the beautiful grey Hussonet filly runs third-up in the Angus Armanaso looking for her first Group race win.
Having come devastatingly close when defeated a whisker by Maybe Discreet in the Edward Manifold during the spring, Members Joy was last seen crossing just a short half-head away second to Octavia in the Listed Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m) at this track on February 9 – an effort she is tipped to improve on when stepped up in distance.
Another highly-regarded filly in the mix is then Michael Kent’s daughter of Elusive Quality Summer Gem who has the far outside barrier to overcome with returning jockey Brad Rawiller to ride.
Summer Gem enjoyed back-to-back Melbourne wins in January before her disappointing seventh in the Kevin Hayes which Kent is hoping she can bounce back from despite her awkward barrier this weekend.
There are then two last-start winners looking to extend their winning streaks in the Angus Armanasco Stakes this weekend with the David Hayes-trained Red Fez and Luke Oliver’s Hamam who have drawn well in gates three and one respectively.
Red Ransom filly Red Fez is yet to taste defeat having backed up from her good win at Ballarat on debut last month with a close victory at Sandown on February 6, ridden both times by apprentice hoop Chad Schofield who retains the ride on Saturday.
Hamam meanwhile has also won both of their starts this time in, the Al Maher filly saluting firstly at Werribee over 1100m and then at Bendigow when stepped up to 1300m.
Completing the Angus Armanasco Stakes line-up are then the Peter Moody-trained Kevin Hayes Stakes fourth placed Meliora, Craig Williams’ ride Balaclava Lady who was fifth in the Kevin Hayes, and Pat Carey’s Zabeel filly Gondokoro who hasn’t raced since her seventh in the Crown Oaks.
