2013 Australian Cup First Acceptances Headed by Green Moon

Melbourne Cup champion Green Moon tops initial acceptances for the Group 1 2013 Australian Cup (2000m) which will take place at Flemington on March 9.

Twenty four horses remain in contention for the $1 million event but none have a bigger profile than the Lloyd Williams-owned import.

Green Moon has been a highly successful galloper since making his Australian debut in August 2011 with key results outside of his Melbourne Cup victory including a runner-up finish in the 2011 Caulfield Cup and winning the Group 1 2012 Turnbull Stakes last year.

The six-year-old is expected to kick off his autumn campaign this Saturday in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m).

Green Moon is one of three Lloyd Williams-owned horses in Australian Cup acceptances with the others Tanby and Mourayan.

Also set to begin their Australian Cup campaign in the Futurity Stakes is fellow import Glass Harmonium who was last seen running second to Alcopop in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes in November.

There is no shortage of Group 1 winners in the Australian Cup acceptances with Mawingo another import with strong credentials.

The 2012 Doomben Cup winner had a disappointing illness-affected spring campaign but showed he is over those concerns earlier this month when running second to All Too Hard in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes.

An eye-catching third in the CF Orr was Mr Moet and the Perth galloper will continue on an Australian Cup path this weekend when he contests the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield.

The five-year-old gelding is coming off a stellar campaign in his home state where he won the Group 1 Railway Stakes and finished second in the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic and the Group 2 Perth Cup.

Victoria Derby winner Fiveandahalfstar is one of a number of three-year-olds among the acceptors and is joined by Derby runner-up Super Cool and Michael Kent-trained pair Philippi and High Shot.
