Ortensia and Woorim Head 2013 Oakleigh Plate Weights

Defending champion Woorim and globetrotting mare Ortensia will share the topweight of 58kg for Saturday’s Group 1 $400,000 2013 Oakleigh Plate (1100m).

Both horses will be running first-up and both will be coming back after an extended period of time off.

Ortensia hasn’t been seen since September when her successful international campaign ended in disappointing circumstances when 12th in the Sprint Cup at Haydock in the UK.

Prior to that the Paul Messara-trained galloper enjoyed an outstanding overseas expedition that saw her record victories in the Group 1 Al Quoz sprint in Dubai and both the Group 2 King George Stakes and the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes.

Woorim delivered Robert Heathcote his first Group 1 win with a barnstorming come-from-behind win in the Oakleigh Plate last year before illness and injury saw him struggle for the rest of the autumn and winter.

The seven-year-old was then forced to miss the entire spring after suffering a tendon injury early in his preparation.

Also high up in the weights is unbeaten Perth sprinter Barakey (57kg) who will have his first race outside Western Australia this weekend.

The five-year-old has dominated the sprinting scene in the west, chalking up 11 undefeated starts including the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes in November.

Winterbottom Stakes third placegetter Spirit Of Boom could get the chance to turn the tables on Barakey and has been allocated 56kg for the challenge.

The Queensland sprinter is coming off a solid spring campaign where he finished runner-up in the Group 3 Bobbie Lewis Quality and the Group 2 Yellowglen Stakes and third in the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes.

Former Magic Millions Classic winner Karuta Queen will step out for her first start under new trainer Peter Moody with a favourable weight allocation of 52.5kg.

Other notable horses nominated for the Oakleigh Plate include Queenslsand gelding Adebisi (55kg), Australia Stakes winner Sea Lord (55.5kg) and 2012 third placegetter Facile Tigre (55kg).
