The appearance of Black Caviar in the Group 1 2013 William Reid Stakes (1200m) will not prevent Perth star Luckygray lining up in the Moonee Valley feature sprint on March 22.
The five-year-old grey gelding arrived in Melbourne safely on Monday night for his 2013 Melbourne Autumn Campaign that will begin on March 9 in the Group 1 2013 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington.
Trainer Gino Poletti was left as amazed as everybody following Black Caviar’s stunning victory but will not avoid the superstar sprinter of the world.
“It will be an honour to race against her and just finish second,” Poletti told the West Australian.
With regular race jockey Shaun O’Donnell in the saddle, Luckygray was given an exhibition gallop at Ascot on Saturday.
O’Donnell copped a 17-day suspension for his ride on Dreamway in the Detonator Stakes on that same day but will have served his time before Luckygray’s first-up test in the Newmarket.
The Bradbury’s Luck gelding is having his second trip to Melbourne after a brief stopover in the spring where he finished fourth in the PB Lawrence Stakes and seventh in the Memsie Stakes.
Poletti said how the popular galloper performs this autumn will go along way to deciding where his spring targets will lie.
“It will give me an idea where we can go in the spring,” Poletti said.
“I will go later in the spring and have a couple of runs there and then come back for our carnival.”
Luckygray is one of 34 horses nominated for the William Reid Stakes. Apart from the champion mare Black Caviar, other key entrants include unbeaten Perth sprinter Barakey, triple Group 1 winner Sea Siren, globerotting success story Ortensia and Black Caviar Lightning runner-up Moment Of Change.
There’s three Group 1 races at Caulfield this weekend and when markets open sensational odds will be found at bookmaker.com.au.
