Undefeated WA sprint star Barakey has safely made the trip from Perth to Victoria ahead of their interstate debut at Caulfield Racecourse this Saturday in the 2013 Oakleigh Plate, the Jim Taylor-trained galloper touching down in Melbourne overnight.
The Key Business gelding is sure to draw plenty of attention on the weekend as they look to extended a flawless race record to 12 consecutive wins when they take on a crack field including the well-travelled Ortensia and reigning champ Woorim in the $400,000 Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m).
It will be their first run outside of Western Australia where Barakey has been dominating the sprint scene including their last start victory in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) at Ascot back on November 24.
They now have four days to prepare for their big Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival assignment based at Aquanita Racing’s Caulfield stables with Taylor, former trainer of multiple Group 1 winner Hay List, happy with the way they travelled.
“I flew over on the plane last night with him and Luckygray,” Taylor said on Tuesday.
“He handled everything good as gold, it was like he’d done it before.
“I’ll do some light work with him tomorrow at Caulfield and then do a little bit more on Thursday.
“I just took him for a walk this morning because he travelled last night he didn’t need too much work.”
Confident his horse has the class Taylor said the Oakeligh Plate barriers would play a big part in Barakey’s chances on the weekend and that jockey Jason Brown could take the horse back off the speed if they drew a favourable inside alley.
“The biggest issue for us will be the barrier because in a capacity field like that you are going to need a good draw,” he said.
“I’d much prefer to draw an inside barrier tomorrow with him.
“From an inside draw he’d probably take a sit because there are some pretty fast horses in the race.
“He certainly doesn’t have to lead (as he has done so far).”
Barakey has been allocated 57kg in the Oakleigh Plate 2013 weights which are topped by Paul Messara‘s three-time Group 1 winner Ortensia and the Rob Heathcote-trained Woorim on 58kg which is slightly more than Taylor was banking on.
“I thought we would be two kilos off Ortensia because we were seven points under her, but they dropped her a point and she is allowed two kilos because she is a mare,” Taylor said.
The 2013 Oakleigh Plate final field as well as the other Blue Diamond Stakes Day majors is due for release on Wednesday and will be published right here at Races.com.au.
