Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Emphatic Widden Stakes winner Overreach did enough in her big weekend success at Rosehill to hit top spot in the 2013 Golden Slipper odds overtaking former favourite Villa Verde in the futures markets for the world’s richest juveniles’ race.
In a blistering display of speed and acceleration the Exceed And Excel filly broke her maiden status in the finest of styles with her huge six length win over $31 roughie Everage in the Listed Widden Stakes (1100m) on Saturday, Brilliant Bisc ($4.80) a further two lengths away third.
After a second on debut to former Golden Slipper favourite Villa Verde in the Listed Inglis Debutants Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield last October, Overreach resumed off a four month break and showed her affinity for the Sydney way of racing with her fast Widden Stakes win.
Not only did the $1.75 favourite salute for the punters but Overreach ran the 1100m in a sharp 1:04.21 seconds which was over one full second faster than Never Can Tell won the colts & geldings’ Canonbury Stakes by at the same meeting.
Waterhouse may have lost the Canonbury with the hot favourite Whittington, former third favouirte for the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) on April 6, running second but she unearthed an even stronger contender in Overreach – which was no surprise to her.
“That is exactly what I thought she would do,” Waterhouse said on Saturday.
“She is an unbelievably exciting filly and is right up to Golden Slipper class.”
Prior to her romp in the Widden Overreach could be found as long as $17 in the early Golden Slipper odds at bookmaker.com.au.
She has since had her price slashed right into $5.50 with Villa Verde now the $8 second elect, a deserving price according to Waterhouse.
“This filly (Overreach) has an incredible cruising speed and what about her acceleration? She is a joy to watch,” she said.
Sydney’s leading lady of racing Waterhouse was thrilled with the result and believes the fillies’ have this year’s Golden Slipper in the bag.
“The fillies are dominant,” she said.
“There’s Villa Verde, Guelph, Miracles Of Life and now Overreach.
“I’m not saying a colt can’t win the Golden Slipper but right now the fillies have the edge.”
And, if any trainer should know, it is Waterhouse who has already prepared an incredible four Golden Slipper winners most recently with Pierro 12 months ago.
It wasn’t only Waterhouse singing Overreach praises after the Widden Stakes but jockey Tommy Berry was also full of admiration of that effort and expectation of what was to come.
“They have asked me to compare her to Karuta Queen, but she is better,” Berry said.
“She is the best two-year-old I have ridden; in fact, she is the best horse I have ridden.
“It’s a privilege to be on her back. She left Whittington in her wake during trackwork the other day, and he’s a little professional.”
