Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
A number of this autumn’s top Australian Cup fancies have been nominated for the Peter Young Stakes 2013 at Caulfield Racecourse this Saturday, the race formerly known as the St George Stakes to run as part of the Blue Diamond Stakes Day action.
With nominations extended until 10:00am (AEST) on Tuesday, the current early entries for the $220,000 Group 2 Carlton Draught Peter Young Stakes (1800m) feature 12 talented staying types.
A nice lead-up race to some of the longer distanced features of the Melbourne Festival of Racing including the $1 million Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on March 9, the Peter Young Stakes is shaping up as a crack showdown in 2013.
The two most notable hopefuls in the mix this year are Group 1 winners Mawingo and Mr Moet who occupy the third and fourth lines of early Australian Cup betting paying $.605 and $7.50 respectively.
Anthony Freedman’s imported Tertullian stallion Mawingo enjoyed a smashing winter last year which was headlined by their win in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) in Brisbane.
Their spring was a disaster and cut short before they resumed on February 9 at Caulfield to run an eye-catching second behind super colt All Too Hard in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m), an effort they should be able to improve on second-up.
Perth raider Mr Moet from the Lark Hill stables of Adam Durrant meanwhile earned a trip across the nation after a huge summer back home that included their Railway Stakes success, and Kingston Town Classic and Perth Cup seconds.
They debuted in Melbourne in the CF Orr and were a big finisher when beaten just over half a length to run third behind All Too Hard and Mawingo.
The Michael Moroney-trained CF Orr Stakes fourth placed Wall Street, winner of the Group 1 Emirates Stakes three years ago when still prepared by Jeff Lynds in New Zealand, is also set to back up in the Peter Young Stakes on Saturday.
The other two shorter-priced Australian Cup-bound horses nominated for the Peter Young this weekend are then the OTI-owned French import Prairie Star ($17) now with Danny O’Brien who is out to improve on their Carlyon Cup 10th and the Phillip Stokes-trained Adelaide visitor Éclair Surprise ($18) coming off a resuming run back home.
Also heading towards the Australian Cup are the likes of Robert Hickmott’s Group 2 Zipping Classic champ Tanby racing for the first time since November and the Chris Waller-trained Foreteller.
The current Peter Young Stakes 2013 nominations are detailed below with the final field due out on Wednesday.
