Steps In Time Leads All the Way to Win 2013 Thoroughbred Breeders Classic

A mature first-up performance and a crafty front-running ride from Jim Cassidy saw Steps In Time claim the Group 2 2013 Thoroughbred Breeders Classic (1200m) at Rosehill today.

The five-year-old bounded out of the gates to assume the lead from barrier five and that is where she stayed as the field spread quickly behind her.

Cassidy remained patient on the John O’Shea-trained galloper and while she tired late she was still good enough to hold off a fighting effort from runner-up Red Tracer.

It was the second straight victory in the mares’ only event for Steps In Time who scored her first Group win in the race last year.

Cassidy said the daughter of Danehill Dancer had matured both physically and mentally in her time off since the spring.

“I think this mare’s big plus is she’s come back so much stronger this time. She’s not as aggressive as she was last prep,” Cassidy said.

“She listened today…I’m pleased that she’s backed up that little bit of aggressiveness and it was a good training effort.”

O’Shea praised the ride of Cassidy but was not surprised by the performance after some strong trials leading into the race.

“Evidence by her trials she’s going very well. The family are a family that traditionally go better as they get older,” O’Shea said.

Steps In Time and Red Tracer are likely to face off a number of times throughout the autumn including in the Group 1 2013 Coolmore Classic.
