Rebel Dane Remains Unbeaten With 2013 Royal Sovereign Stakes Win

Gary Portelli-trained colt Rebel Dane has produced a remarkable last-to-first performance to fly home and win the Group 2 2013 Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill today.

Having his first start of the autumn and the first of his career at stakes level, Rebel Dane showed there are far bigger things to come.

Horses had struggled to make up ground earlier in the day which meant many onlookers were surprised when jockey Jason Collett elected to settle at the back of the field aboard the son of California Dane.

Heading into the straight Urquidez pushed forward into a commanding lead as Collett stoked up his mount wide on the track.

But then the exciting colt found an extra gear to come for Urquidez and overtake him in the final 50 metres and claim a stunning victory.

Portelli was left shocked at the performance and is excited about tackling some of the country’s best three-year-olds this autumn.

“He might be alright aye,” Portelli said.

“To be back running last and have to come around the whole field, they haven’t made up any ground [today]. This might be the best one I’ve had, fingers crossed.

“Some big names to take on from here on, Pierro etc…if things go to plan next time, who knows?”

Collett admitted it was never the plan to get so far back but was thrilled with the performance of the galloper he has ridden in all four career starts to date.

“Plan A didn’t go to plan so plan B…big effort,” Collett said.

“I don’t know if I’ve ridden a horse like him. He really wants to win.

“He’s progressive, he’s stepped up again today. I’m proud of him.”
