Classy Grahame Begg-trained filly Bennetta scored a third straight victory when storming down the outside to win the Group 2 2013 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill today.
The talented three-year-old was stepping up to stakes level for the first time but proved she was more than up to class to fly past leader Ichihara in the final furlong.
Begg has always rated the daughter of General Nediym highly but admitted it was important to win today in order to qualify for bigger targets later in the 2013 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
The Randwick trainer said the Group 1 2013 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1500m) is the major goal and is confident she will be able to handle the step up in distance.
“The races she’s won before they wouldn’t have been able to get her into any of the better class races,” Begg said.
“It was very important to get a Group win…onwards and upwards for her.”
“She’s lovely and relaxed…I think that probably she may run a mile (1600m) at some stage.”
Jockey James McDonald has ridden the progressive filly in her past three starts and was impressed by her ability to perform on a damp Rosehill surface.
“Today she had to do it the tough way and grind away and show her fighting qualities,” McDonald said.
Ichihara produced a bold effort to hang on for second after setting a hot pace for the majority of the race while Crown Oaks Dear Demi flashed home for third.
