2013 Talindert Stakes Winner Casquets Could Back Up in Blue Diamond

A fighting win from raw filly Casquets in the Listed 2013 Talindert Stakes (1100m) at Flemington today has trainer Mark Kavanagh strongly considering backing her up in next Saturday’s Group 1 2013 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m).

Kavanagh admitted to being slightly disappointed with her third-place performance on debut at Moonee Valley on February 1 but she redeemed herself down the Flemington straight.

Stephen Baster, who has recently returned from Singapore, was aboard the daughter of Fastnet Rock who broke clear in the final furlong with Pat Carey-trained filly Annenberg.

From there it was a genuine battle but Casquets managed to get the edge in the dying stages to claim a long-neck victory.

Kavanagh said he will monitor the emerging galloper closely over the weekend but believes she has what it takes to compete in next week’s $1 million juvenile feature.

“We’ll see how she does over the weekend and work out whether we send her to the paddock or whether we go forward,” Kavanagh said.

“There’s certainly improvement in her. If she could improve going to next week as much as she did from Moonee Valley to here she would certainly be a chance I think.

“We left her pretty raw first-up, we’ve just let her naturally improve so we’ll wait and see.”

It marks a successful return for Baster who had his Singapore riding contract terminated last month.

“It’s great to be back with a winner at Flemington, it’s great to be home,” Baster said.

Baster admitted Casquets is still green but is confident she has plenty of improvement should Kavanagh decide to back her up in the Diamond.

“She seems to be a pretty tough filly to me,” he said.
