Golden Slipper winner Pierro will resume in the Group 2 2013 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill on March 2 after coming through a trial at Warwick Farm this morning in promising fashion.
The star three-year-old ran home strongly in the trial to finish second to stablemate Landing, leaving Waterhouse confident he is ready to return early next month.
“Champion colt Pierro had a nice hit out at Warwick Farm this morning. He has pulled up well & will contest the 1400m Hobartville Stakes,” Waterhouse tweeted.
It would appear the Group 1 2013 Newmarket Handicap at Flemington on March 9 is now off the agenda.
When Pierro steps out in the Hobartville Stakes, he will be having his first race since October when he finished third in the Cox Plate behind Ocean Park and All Too Hard.
Despite two defeats to finish his spring, he also ran second to All Too Hard in the Caulfield Guineas, Pierro still boasts a stunning resume of eight wins from 10 starts.
Where exactly his autumn goals lie have not yet been decided but the 2013 Doncaster Mile has often been spruiked as a possibility.
Waterhouse was more than impressed with Landing, who led from start to finish in the trial to defeat Pierro.
“Landing caught the eye when leading from pillar to post. Tom Berry commented ‘ready to race. Should be a force in the autumn,'” Waterhouse said.
The More Than Ready gelding missed the spring with injury after signalling plenty of potential to win the first four starts of his career in dominant style during the autumn before things went amiss in the Hawkesbury Guineas.
