Whittington Nears Odds-On in Canonbury Stakes 2013 Betting

Golden Slipper claims go on the line at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday in two Listed features, the colts and geldings’ edition of which is the 2013 Canonbury Stakes where the Gai Waterhouse-trained Whittington is nearing odds-on territory.

The Tale Of The Cat colt was a black type winner on debut last October scoring a huge three length victory in the Listed NSW Thoroughbred Breeders Plate (1000m) at Randwick and resumes in Saturday’s $100,000 Listed Canonbury Stakes (1100m) on the back of two winning Sydney trials.

Their latest hitout was over 1050m at the start of February and they easily accounted for their rivals there now looking hard to beat from barrier one of 10 on Saturday, Tommy Berry retaining the ride, as the $2 favourite.

Whittington is Waterhouse’s top fancy to score her incredible fifth win in the world’s richest handicap, the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) back at Rosehill on April 6, currently occupying the third line of Golden Slipper odds at $11.

Following Whittington in the Canonbury Stakes odds are then three other single-figure chances with:

  • #3 Criterion ($5.50) – Sebring colt from the local stables of David Payne was a winner on debut over Sweet Idea at this track over 1100m in early November, trialed over 900m on February 5 but was sixth so need to prove fitness on the weekend, gate four will help and Glyn Schofield stays on
  • #4 Never Can Tell ($5.50) – Three length winner at Rosehill last October, Anthony Cummings’ resuming colt coming off a close second in a trial over 740m, extra distance here will suit
  • #5 Napayshini ($6) – Gosford galloper entered Golden Slipper calculations in December when an eye-catching second at Warwick Farm, has been working well since and ready to step up to stakes class here

Other longer-priced juveniles that could prove the value bet of the day on Saturday then include Payne’s other runner Dowdstown Charlie ($15), unraced Fastnet Rock gelding Angus Rock ($17) and the well-tried Regimental Pride ($26) who has had four starts for two wins, both at Rosehill, so far.
