Sydney’s leading Lady of Racing Gai Waterhouse will saddle up a number of her Golden Slipper fancies in the Rosehill races this Saturday including the favourites in the two juvenile features one of which is Overreach in the fillies-only 2013 Widden Stakes.
In the colts & geldings’ Canonbury Stakes Waterhouse’s NSW Thoroughbred Breeders Plate winner Whittington, third favourite in the futures bookmaker.com.au, will jump near odds-on favouritism for their resuming run.
One race later attention will turn to the $100,000 Listed Widden Stakes (1100m) for the girls where Exceed And Excel filly Overreach is the top fancy of the 14 two-year-olds engaged.
Drawn in gate six with Tommy Berry to ride Overreach pays $2.50 in the early Widden Stakes markets as she kicks off a Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival campaign targeting the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens on April 6.
While their stakes winning stablemate Whittington pays $11 in the early Slipper odds Overreach is not much further behind at a current quote of $17 equal with Peter Snowden’s unbeaten Chairman’s Stakes winner Metastasio.
Overreach gets her chance to prove a genuine Golden Slipper hope when she races for the second time on Saturday after a good second on debut at Caulfield last October behind current Slipper favourite Villa Verde in the Listed Inglis Debutants Stakes (1000m).
She showed she could handle the Sydney way of racing too with a massive six length trial win at Rosehill last month, the hype surrounding this one building.
Only three of Overreach’s 13 rivals in the Widden are currently under $10 in the markets with:
- #1 Brilliant Bisc ($4.50) – Peter Moody’s Gimcrack Stakes winning Elvstoem filly has barrier 11 to overcome first-up here, looked nice in a trial at the track last month and if they win this could be a late entry for the Slipper
- #13 Most Joyful ($6.50) – Unraced Waterhouse-trained filly who will draw plenty of attention being a full sister to multiple Group 1 champion More Joyous, has had two trials including a win at Randwick last month and is bred to win
- #3 Calming Influence ($7.50) – Another top fancy with a horror barrier (12), Chris Waller’s Commands filly races here after a win on debut at the same track last month beating a decent field over 1100m
There are then a number of double-figure fillies that could have claims for an upset including another last-start winner from Waller in Mamwaazel ($15) with a nice barrier two draw, the rails-drawn Zizou filly Everage ($17) coming off a win here in the mud on February 2, and Anasheed ($18) in gate three.
