Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
There may be a former Magic Millions Classic winner and Group 1 champ among her rivals but Grahame Begg’s flying filly Bennetta has opened top of the odds for this Saturday’s Light Fingers Stakes 2013 at Rosehill Racecourse.
The three-year-old daughter of General Nediym is one of 11 three-year-old fillies facing off in this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m), a race often used as the starting point for horses heading towards the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) at Royal Randwick at the end of April.
Drawn in gate eight with New Zealand-born hoop James McDonald booked for the ride Bennetta is paying $3.60 through bookmaker.com.au to score her third straight win on Saturday.
She broke her maiden status at start number four back in December at Canterbury before backing up on the Gold Coast in mid-January to score a decisive 2.5 length victory after overcoming barrier 12 of 12 in the Magic Millions Fillies & Mares Handicap (1300m).
Dropping back to the 1200m first-up Bennetta certainly has class and is in a nice position to kick off a prosperous autumn campaign with a win here.
Still there are plenty of talented fillies between her and the finish line including three other single-figure fancies with:
- #1 Driefontein ($5) – Last year’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner (on protest) has drawn the rails here as she runs third-up, her most recent run was a close third in the MM Guineas and back at 1200m will suit
- #2 Dear Demi ($6.50) – Plenty of eyes will be on Clarry Conners’ resuming Crown Oaks winner here, the 1200m is likely to be a bit short for her but has plenty of class and four Group 1 runs behind her already so definitely don’t discount – the bookies certainly aren’t
- #Brave Soul ($5.50) – Joe Pride-trained daughter of More Than Ready was doing well in a few Listed races during the spring, first Group assignment since a failed effort in the wet at this track behind Pierro last March, could the rain hamper her chances again?
Other fillies just outside the top chances at more generous odds then include John Thompson’s Flight Stakes runner-up Longport ($10) last seen running fourth in the Thousand Guineas, Wyong-based filly Ichihara ($10) and the Chris Waller-trained Jade Marauder ($13) who was just off this bunch last prep.
