2013 Golden Slipper Favourite Graces Bendigo Races

Bendigo race goers could get a look at this year’s Golden Slipper winner on Sunday with the current top fancy for the world’s richest juveniles’ race Villa Verde likely to step out between races at the track this weekend.

Shaun Dwyer’s local Bendigo girl hit the top of the futures markets for the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m), due to run at Rosehill Gardens on April 6, after winning her opening two career starts in the spring.

The nicely-bred daughter of Not A Single Doubt firstly scored a win over the Gai Waterhouse-trained Overreach in the Listed Inglis Debutants Stakes (1000im) at Caulfield before backing up 20 days later at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day to become a dual stakes winner with a big three length victory over Purrific in the Listed 7News Plate (1000m) overcoming gate 13 of 14.

Connections are still penciling in her exact path to the Golden Slipper 2013 during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival but she will spend the bulk of her next campaign at home in Bendigo before travelling to the city for a Slipper lead-up run in the $300,000 Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) on March 23.

Having worked well this month after recovering from a slight fitness issue during her break the lovely grey is set to step things up a notch on the course proper at Bendigo so long as the club gives it the okay.

“I’m not sure yet, but I’m looking at galloping her between races on Sunday at Bendigo,” Dwyer said on Thursday.

“Just an easy 800 (metres) and work up the last 400 in 25 or 26 (seconds), just to kick her off and then we’ll start to step her up.”

“She had a little bit of a cough for a while but she’s good now.

“I brought her in probably two weeks earlier because she was just doing too well in the paddock.

“We’re probably still a week ahead of ourselves, so everything’s good.”

Villa Verde currently pays $8 in the Golden Slipper betting markets ahead of Peter Snowden’s 2013 Blue Diamond-bound Exceed And Excel filly Guelph ($10).
