Tuscan Fires to Win 2013 Mornington Cup – Results

Ballarat gelding Tuscan Fire ran the race of his life and in doing so gained qualification into the 2013 Caulfield Cup when scoring a dominant victory in the Listed $350,000 2013 Mornington Cup (2400m) today.

The Dan O’Sullivan-trained gelding had been showing strong form at city tracks but stepped it up a gear to claim a three-length win from Durnford and Macedonian.

Titch dismounted rider Linda Meech coming out of the gates which saw him bowl along jockeyless at the front of the field with Shadows In The Sun and Travolta in hot pursuit.

Champion rider Glen Boss positioned Tuscan Fire in an ideal position behind the speed where he got a comfortable run.

As the field neared the home turn they swamped the leaders and once six-year-old burst through there was no stopping him as he galloped clear for an easy victory.

O’Sullivan was elated with the win that he didn’t believe would always be possible when he set the lofty target prior to the preparation.

“You couldn’t believe it could work out as beautiful as that to get the run that he got,” O’Sullivan said.

“It’s a big thrill. It’s a great bunch of owners…a huge, big thrill to come here and win this today.

“Everything went perfect today, [it was] a great ride.”

Tuscan Fire often competes in jumps’ races but O’Sullivan was happy just to enjoy the moment and worry about his future targets later.

Boss praised the training effort of O’Sullivan after also riding Tuscan Fire in his three preceding starts.

“This is all about Dan really. He’s turned this horse out in unbelievable condition every time I’ve ridden him,” Boss said.

“He looked good and geez he gave me a great ride.”

It was the first Mornington Cup win for Boss who admitted he was happy to achieve a big-race win at a track he has struggled to ride winners at in the past.
