Dan O’Sullivan’s consistent six-year-old stayer Tuscan Fire has opened favourite in the Mornington Cup 2013 odds for this Wednesday but there are a number of rival gallopers hot on their heels in the markets.
Running as Mornington Race 8 at 4:00pm (AEST) this year’s edition of the $350,000 Listed Centrebet Mornington Cup (2400m) drew 14 confirmed starters plus three emergencies lying in wait for a scratching to gain a run.
Bookies around the country have now opened Mornington Cup betting and it is Tuscanos gelding Tuscan Fire from Ballarat who is sitting top of the odds at a current quote of $4.
They have drawn wide in gate 13 but will come into 11 with all the emergencies out, Glen Boss retaining the ride after partnering with them for their three most recent runs.
Those three runs have been excellent two with two big wins at Flemington last month over 2000m and then 2500m before their devastatingly close last start second to Durnford in the Mornington Cup Prelude on February 2 when carrying 59kg.
They drop back to 56.5kg here too which will work in their advantage.
Following closely in the Mornington Cup odds is then early market mover, imported French galloper Award Season who is the first emergency and as yet not assured of a run.
Well backed into $4.40 the Kris Lees-trained Dansili gelding has won their past three races on the trot by easy margins and should they make the field on Wednesday could prove the one to beat.
In December they enjoyed a 3.5 length win at Muswellbrook before stepping up to city class on January 5 to win again this time over the mile and a half at Warwick Farm.
They were last seen scoring their best victory yet in a short five start career when putting four lengths on Word Gets Around in a Benchmark 73 over 1900m at Canterbury on January 25 and their jockey there Kerrin McEvoy will be aboard again in the Cup should there be a scratching.
“I’ve ridden Award Season in Sydney at his last two and he’s been very impressive,” McEvoy said.
In a relatively open top end of the market there are then three other single figure chances with:
- #12 Durnford ($5) – Craig Williams replaces McEvoy for the ride on Pat Carey’s Helenus gelding who is after their second on the trot following a tight win in the Mornington Cup Prelude over a similar field carrying the same weight (54kg)
- #13 Kutchinsky ($7) – Awkward barrier 14 draw to overcome but Danny O’Brien’s Anabaa six-year-old has the class to do just that, have been racing well this summer including a last start victory over Elusive King and last Sunday’s Hobart Cup winner Hurdy Gurdy Man over 2000m on January 13
- #3 Shadows In The Sun ($8.50) – Another last start winner of the Listed Australia Day Cup (2400m) but Anthony Cummings’ Group 1 winner has 59kg here up 5kg from that victory
Other longer priced hopefuls that could prove the value bet of the Mornington Cup then include Gai Waterhouse’s Australia Day Cup third placegetter Reuben Percival ($10) who must carry the 60kg top-weight, the fellow Waterhouse-trained Travolta ($13) drawn ideally in barrier four who did one better when second in the Australia Day Cup, and third emergency Angola ($12) who needs three withdrawals to gain a start.
Should Pat Carey’s Helenus four-year-old Angola get in they, like Award Season, are a genuine shot at the Cup having drawn barrier one and run well in their latest starts including a huge 6.5 length win at Ballarat over the mile two back carrying 58.5kg.
