Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The Australian Open is now well in the past, the cricket is winding down and the football is yet to begin which will ensure the Melbourne public flock to Flemington on Saturday to see the return of the world’s best sprinter in the Group 1 2013 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m).
No horse in recent times has been able to capture the attention of the general public like Black Caviar and the Victorian Racing Club are expecting 25,000 onlookers to witness her comeback on Saturday.
While the champion is again expected to win in comfortable style, her huge throng of fans face an anxious wait.
After her last outing in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot in June, there was speculation she would be retired after suffering muscle tears to her hindquarters in what was the tightest win of her illustrious career.
Her camp, headed by trainer Peter Moody, insist she has come back as good as ever but it will only be known for sure on Saturday.
Australia’s piece of equine perfection will be out to extend her phenomenal record to 23 unbeaten starts and in doing so claim a third consecutive Lightning Stakes victory.
Whether she can return to her previous heights remains to be seen but the big mare has not lost any of her aura.
Black Caviar has gained a reputation for scaring off her rivals and the same thing has occurred this weekend.
Thirteen other horses have been nominated for the Lightning but all the household names of Australian sprinting are missing, suggesting rival trainers think she is still unbeatable.
But despite far less than that figure expected to line up in the final field, Victorian Racing Club racing manager James Earls has said the race is in no danger of being scrapped from the card.
”It’s fabulous to have her back at Flemington, and as far as the numbers go, whatever final acceptance is received, the race will go on,” Earls said.
