Paul Messara’s undefeated Scone-based youngster Vadashan has confirmed their Australian Derby 2013 target this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival after a nice win at Warwick Farm on Saturday.
Following a successful debut at Kembla Grange over 1400m from January 19 the promising Redoute’s Choice colt retained their flawless record over the weekend with another victory, this time over the Warwick Farm mile in a Benchmark 71 for three-year-olds.
Going out as a $12 shot Vadashan was ridden to perfection by the in-form Christian Reith, who also rode home the day’s first winner in 2013 Golden Slipper bound Va Pensiero, to beat home Unimpechable by half a length with General Groove finishing off the trifecta a further two lengths away third.
Messara is confident Vadashan, whose damn Vadsalina is owned by the Aga Khan, will continue to improve as they’re stepped up in distance with the $1.5 million ATC Australian Derby (2400m) at Royal Randwick on April 13 their ultimate goal this prep.
“Vadashan is bred to get the Derby distance and is headed that way,” Messara said.
“He is a lovely horse and has handled everything so far in which is his first racing preparation.”
On Saturday Messara also outlined plans to bypass this Saturday’s $500,000 Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington, the resuming run for the world’s best mare Black Caviar, with his internationally performing champ Ortensia.
Instead the seven-year-old Testa Rossa mare, who hasn’t raced since a failed effort in the Group 1 Betfred Sprint Cup at Haydock Park in England last September, will go first-up to the $400,000 Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on Blue Diamond Stakes Day, February 23.
