Thomas Lyons Stakes Winner Youthful Jack Racing’s Latest Millionaire

Ross Stitt’s Taree-based galloper Youthful Jack surpassed the $1 million in prize money earned on the weekend when they successfully defended their title in the $100,000 Listed Thomas Lyons Stakes (1400m) at Hobart Racecourse.

The seven-year-old Youthful Legs gelding saluted in career win number 17 at start number 56 on the weekend pushing their earnings to $1,025,380 when defeating home fellow interstate raider Cellarmaster (2nd) and local mare My Temptation (3rd) who was a $30 roughie in the Thomas Lyons Stakes.

Currently being prepared by Spreyton-based trainer Adam Trinder for their Tasmanian Summer Carnival raid, Youthful Jack’s weekend win was a nice improvement on their first-up sixth in the Listed Tattsbet.Com Stakes (1200m) at Launceston last month – a race they also won last year.

“He had two runs in NSW before coming to me and he probably went into the Stakes a bit underdone but he has come on in leaps and bounds since that race and what we saw today was what we had expected in all three races that were planned for him in Tasmania,” Trinder said.

Prolific veteran jockey Robert Thompson, also aboard for their winning trifecta in Tassie last year, was thrilled to be aboard the horse for their historical win.

“He’s the million dollar horse from Taree,” Thompson declared after the race.

“I have ridden for (trainer and part-owner) Ross Stitt for 30 years now and he only paid $5000 for him. He’s now passed $1 million.

“It’s a great thrill.”

Stitt was also over the moon with the result having come close to preparing a million dollar winner with both 2008 Australian Oaks winner Heavenly Glow ($792,360) who was prepared by Allan Denham towards the end of her career, and Precise Timing ($904,715) who raced an incredible 87 times.

They will now continue onto another title defense this time in the $100,000 Listed George Adams Plate (1600m) at Launceston Racecourse on February 27 where Stitt is confident they will add another trophy to the cabinet.

“I knew he would go better over the 1400 metres today,” he said on Sunday.

“And he’ll win the next one too, the George Adams Stakes over 1600 metres at Launceston.”
