Hurdy Gurdy Man Wins Hobart Cup 2013 – Results

Darren Weir’s in-form Warrnambool galloper Hurdy Gurdy Man enjoyed a successful raid on the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival on Sunday with a smart victory as the favourite in the 2013 Hobart Cup.

Coming off a third in the Terang Cup from the previous Sunday the five-year-old Street Cry stallion jumped as the $3.80 favourite in this year’s $225,000 Group 3 AAMI Hobart Cup (2400m) and thanks to an excellent ride from star interstate hoop Glen Boss they saluted for the punters.

On the line Hurdy Gurdy Man, who had to work from a midfield position on the fence, had one and a quarter lengths to spare over Mick Burles’ last start Summer Cup winner The Cleaner ($7.30) while the defending Hobart Cup winner Geegees Blackflash ($9.50) was far from disgraced finishing just a nose further away in third.

“He looked ready that horse today,” Boss said.

“He paraded very, very well and this was his race.

“He had a lovely run. There was a bit of a scrimmage on the home turn that he was able to come through but I had a lot of horse underneath me for when I did go.”

Boss also believed it was his horse’s drop back from 59kg in the Terang Cup to the 54kg minimum on Sunday that did the trick.

“Against the local horses here with their records he was able to get in on the minimum which essentially won him the race,” Boss said.

It was Boss’ first Hobart Cup success and one that will stay with the three time winning Melbourne Cup jockey for a long time while Weir celebrated his fourth win in the race over the past eight years following his success with True Courser (2006), Offenbach (2008) and Gotta Keep Cool (2009).

Weir has had the Hobart Cup on the agenda for Hurdy Gurdy Man since they returned to work this summer off a six month break.

“It has been his target since he first came back into work,” Weir said.

“It was good for it to come off because usually they don’t.”

There is a strong chance Hurdy Gurdy Man will now back up in the $225,000 Group 3 Launceston Cup (2400m) on February 27 which will be the likely aim for the bulk of the Hobart Cup runners with a $100,000 Cups Double Bonus up for grabs for Weir’s horse.

“We’ll get over today first, but he’s done his job now,” Weir said on Sunday.
