A capacity field of sixteen fillies will line up...
This Wednesday the mid-week racing action at Mornington will see the latest Melbourne Festival of Racing stakes showdown take place with the lucrative 2013 Mornington Cup stealing the show.
Scheduled as Race 8 at 4:00pm (AEST) this year’s $350,000 Listed Mornington Cup (2400m) has drawn a capacity final field of 14 starters plus three emergencies.
The 60kg top-weight and top-rated entry is the Gai Waterhouse-trained Reuben Percival who has drawn midfield with barrier seven, Tommy Berry to ride.
The Al Akbar six-year-old is a genuine stayer whose biggest career performance so far was a third to stablemate Glencadam Gold in the Group 1 The Metropolitan over the mile and a half least October.
They have been racing well throughout the summer including a first-up second to Moriarty in the Gosford Cup and a last start third behind Shadows In The Sun in the Listed Australia Day Cup (2400m) at Warwick Farm on January 26.
Australia Day Cup winner Shadows In The Sun and runner-up Travolta are both also set to back-up in the Mornington Cup this week.
Anthony Cummings’ Dane Shadow gelding Shadows In The Sun, winner of the Group 1 SA Derby as a three-year-old back in 2011, won their first race since then with a drought breaking victory at the end of last month.
They will however have to carry considerably more weight in the Mornington Cup going up from 54kg to 59kg, Peter Robl retaining the ride.
Travolta, drawn ideally in barrier two with Vlad Duric riding, meanwhile is the second acceptor for Waterhouse, the Handsome Ransom four-year-old having been in top form since transferring from New Zealand to Sydney.
Sixth in last year’s NZ Derby the gelding has won two of their five starts down under and also posted a nice third in the Gosford Cup before their Australia Day Cup second.
Following Reuben Percival in the Mornington Cup weights are then three hopefuls on 59kg with the aforementioned Shadows In The Sun, Gerald Ryan’s Zabeel seven-year-old Ironstein coming off a Australia Day Cup sixth, and Titch.
Kevin Myers’ veteran Ballarat galloper Titch (barrier nine), like Shadows In The Sun, comes off a last start victory with the Lord Ballina eight-year-old having beat home Lordoftheparrots and subsequent Hobart Cup winner Hurdy Gurdy Man to win the Terang Cup over 2150m on February 3.
The other last start winners in the mix are then the in-form Pat Carey-trained Helenus four-year-old Durnford who will be ridden by Craig Williams from barrier 11 as they look to complete the Mornington Cup Prelude – Mornington Cup double, the Danny O’Brien-trained Kutchinsky coming off a Flemington victory over 2000m who has a horror gate 14 draw to overcome, and the first emergency Award Season who has won their past three races on the trot.
Other notable chances coming off some nice recent runs then include the Dan O’Sullivan-trained Prelude runner-up Tuscan Fire out wide in barrier 13 with Glen Boss in the saddle, Peter Moody’s Australia Day Cup fourth placed Macedonian and the Michael Kent-trained Mossman four-year-old Backbone with barrier three.
