Queensland gelding Adebisi remains on track for the Group 1 2013 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on February 23 after a narrow victory in the Group 3 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday.
The Desleigh Forster-trained five-year-old showed strong fight at the back end of the straight to claw back the lead in the dying stages from Rescue Mission.
It was the first start in Melbourne for the son of Shovhog who was racing on the back of a victory in the Razor Sharp Quality in Sydney in December.
Forster has always had the Oakleigh Plate in mind as the major autumn goal where he will attempt to follow in the footsteps of fellow Queenslander Woorim who took out the race last year.
“This was just to give him a run around Caulfield and to get him used to it,” Forster said.
The Eagle Farm trainer was pleased with the performance and was happy to again prove the southern doubters wrong on her stable star’s ability.
“It was a good tough effort. Before he won in Sydney they thought he was a bit weak but he went to Sydney and he toughed it out and he toughed it out again today,” she said.
“He’s tough and brave, he’s a Queenslander what do you expect.”
The born speedster has now won 10 of 33 starts including five times at stakes level.
With Black Caviar running in the Lightning this weekend, the Oakleigh Plate is expected to contain a strong field and other confirmed starters include defending champion Woorim and unbeaten Perth star Barakey.
