14 Nominations for the Champ’s Return in 2013 Black Caviar Lightning

Thirteen horses have been nominated to take on Australia’s greatest racehorse in her return to the track in the Group 1 $500,000 2013 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) at Flemington on Saturday.

Black Caviar will be racing for the first time since her nail-biting victory in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot in June but she still has the ability to scare away the competition.

All of Australia’s other top sprinters will bypass the Flemington feature, suggesting many of the country’s best trainers still believe the great mare is untouchable.

The six-year-old will be shooting for a 23rd straight win and her third Lighting title that was only this year renamed in her honour.

Group 1-winning filly Samaready is one of the top nominations but is unlikely to take on the equine superstar and will instead race at Moonee Valley on Friday week.

Two of the top nominations outside of Black Caviar she’ll be very familiar with, with stablemates Moment Of Change and Golden Archer both entered.

Moment Of Change has experienced injury problems but the four-year-old is a highly promising galloper, having won five of nine starts including the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield in the early spring.

Golden Archer is a consistent sprinter and will be returning after a spring campaign that saw him win twice and record two runner-up finishes from seven starts.

Clarry Conners has confirmed four-year-old mare Satin Shoes will travel from Sydney for the contest but is realistic about her chances against the queen of the turf.

”If we can run second to Black Caviar and get a Group 1 placing, then that will be okay,” Conners said.

The Flying Spur mare hasn’t won since October 2011 but was runner-up twice at Group 2 level during the Spring Carnival.

Also nominated are in-form gelding First Command, Stephen Theodore’s recent stable addition Last Gift and Robert Smerdon-traind gelding Go The Knuckle.
