Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Ross Stitt’s ageing sprinter Youthful Jack will look to bounce back from their last start sixth during the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival and successfully defend their title in Sunday’s Thomas Lyons Stakes 2013 at Hobart Racecourse.
The now seven-year-old Youthful Legs gelding enjoyed a successful raid on the Apple Isle last summer winning all three of their Tassie assignments when Stitt sent them to Adam Trinder’s Spreyton stables.
First-up last time they won the Listed Thetote.com.au Stakes (1200m) at Launceston before going on to put three lengths on their closest rival in the $100,000 Listed Thomas Lyons Stakes (1400m) before another big 2.5 length effort at Launceston in the $100,000 Listed George Adams Plate (1600m) in February.
This season they went to the same first-up assignment but could only manage to finish 4.5 lengths away sixth to the flying Leon Wells-trained mare Rebel Bride in the January 23 feature.
Back with Trinder for their campaign down in Tasmania, his part-time trainer are hoping they can improve on that and get back to their best in Thomas Lyons Stakes on Sunday.
“He raced a little bit fresh and had a big blow after the race,” Trinder said of their first run back in Tasmania.
“The run in itself tightened him up a little bit. We are a lot happier with him after the run. He looks a lot fitter.”
Youthful Jack will be ridden by Robert Thompson who has partnered with them for their three most recent runs from barrier five of 11, a comparative gate to 7 (of 11) which they won from 12 months ago.
While confident they can produce a good run Trinder is aware that this is a tough Thomas Lyons Stakes field to beat with the likes of Tony Vasil’s Group 1 performer Under The Eiffel, last-start runner-up to Rebel Bride Cellarmaster, and the Anthony Freedman-trained Population coming off a win at Caulfield.
“He is racing a better quality of field and he has to step up but I am quite content in thinking he has stepped up in the past couple of weeks and am comfortable with him heading into the Thomas Lyons,” Trinder said.
“I am still confident to call Jack the benchmark horse in the race.
“He has the score on the board and while he has been out of form for almost 12 months from a prize money perspective I am comfortable with where he is at.
“I would be disappointed if he ran out of the top three and even then I expect more than that.”
