2013 Carlyon Cup Betting Tips

The Group 3 2013 Carlyon Cup (1600m) takes place at Caulfield on Saturday as part of an action-packed program and if the betting is anything to go by, it is set to be an open race.

Consistent Darren Weir-trained gelding Lord Of Brazil ($4) is jostling for favouritism with French import Prairie Star ($4.40) and another three horses are at $6.50 or under.

Chris Waller’s British import Foreteller ($5) continues his come back after missing the spring while Budriguez ($6) will attempt to put back-to-back wins together.

Also under double figures is 11-year-old former Hong Kong star Good Ba Ba ($6.50).

For those who like to chase big numbers there are plenty to come by in this big 13-horse field including Peter Moody’s Highly Recommended ($21), the Darley-owned Chasse ($21) and Group 1 winner Invest ($51).

Can’t work out who to back in this open betting affair? Keep reading as the Races.com.au experts have been hard at work to bring you our very best Carlyon Cup selections.

The Winner

#7 Prairie Star $4.40

A touch short of ideal for Danny O’Brien’s import but he’s got a class edge on his rivals here. Was a Group 2 winner in France and placed at Group 1 level.

Was solid in his first preparation in Australia with consecutive fourths in the Group 3 David Jones Cup and Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes and is likely to be a lot better second time around.

The Placings

#8 Lord Of Brazil $4.00 and #3 Invest $51.00

Boring having the two favourites in the top two spots but it’s hard to leave out Lord Of Brazil. Has missed a place once in his last nine starts and has won three of his last four.

Remarkably consistent, there’s nothing to suggest his form won’t continue this weekend.

Invest is a smoky at big odds coming off an eighth-place finish in the John Dillon Stakes. Never runs well first-up but has class as was shown during her three-year-old career and should get a nice run from barrier two.
