The Group 2 2013 Expressway Stakes (1200m) at Warwick Farm on Saturday may be a rise in class for Happy Galaxy but nobody can deny his form.
The three-year-old colt has been flying of late, racking up three consecutive victories. His last two victories have been particularly impressive, winning by margins of four lengths and three lengths respectively.
The son of Nadeem has earned a step up into Group 2 company after dominating those in his own age group in the Listed Zeditave Stakes at Caulfield on January 26.
There are a number of Group 1 winners included in the field for the weight-for-age test but co-trainer Michael Hawkes is confident his charge has plenty in his favour.
Apart from the obvious weight advantage a three-year-old has in weight-for-age competition, Happy Galaxy is at full fitness while many of his rivals are only just beginning their autumn campaigns.
“He’s drawn a good gate, barrier two, he’s an on-speed runner and he’ll put himself right there,” Hawkes said.
Happy Galaxy is one of 10 runners contesting the Warwick Farm feature with the field also including Chris Waller’s trio Danleigh, Albert The Fat and Tougher Than Ever and 2011 winner Centennial Park.
Waller’s recent stable addition Tougher Than Ever is the only other three-year-old in the race.
The General Nediym colt is due to step out on Australian soil for the first time after beginning his racing career in New Zealand.
Formerly trained by Jason Bridgman at Matamata, Tougher Than Ever wont he Group 1 Diamond Stakes as a two-year-old and was most recently seen in November finishing third in the Group 1 NZ 2000 Guineas.
