Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
It may only hold Listed status but this Saturday’s Kevin Hayes Stakes 2013 at Caulfield Racecourse is still shaping up as a top race on the CF Orr Stakes Day program with 10 talented three-year-old fillies in the mix.
Kicking off the black type racing action as Race 2 the $120,000 Listed Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m) is due to jump at 1:25pm (AEST) and is a nice early autumn lead-up for fillies heading towards some of the Melbourne Festival of Racing’s bigger events such as the Group 2 Angus Armanasco Stakes (1400m) back at the track on Blue Diamond Stakes Day.
Of the 10 fillies engaged it is the Brian Cox-trained Sumakaray who has opened top of the Kevin Hayes Stakes odds at a quote of $3.20, the daughter of Manner Hill having won her past two starts back in December.
After an excellent five length romp at her home track at Wodonga she went to Moonee Valley on December 29 and overcame barrier 10 of 10 to beat home subsequent Listed WJ Adams Stakes winner from last weekend Avoid Lightning.
Cox is now hoping it is his filly’s turn for some black type, Sumakaray to relish her nice barrier two draw with Vlad Duric to ride.
“This is a different ball game for her, but it gives you a little bit of heart the way she won at Moonee Valley,” Cox said.
“And Avoid Lightning came out and won at Caulfield last Saturday which was good to see.
“I’m not getting too cocky but I’m happy with her.”
If all goes to plan on and after Saturday Cox said they would continue onto the $120,000 Listed Typhoon Tracy Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on February 22 with Sumakaray.
Sumakaray is followed in the markets by the rails-drawn Members Joy, Robert Smerdon’s Hussonet grey paying $4.80 to improve on her first-up fourth at the track on Australia Day.
Due to be ridden by Glen Boss once again, Members Joy caught the eye at Flemington last October when a close second to Maybe Discreet in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1610m) before she was outclassed failing to beat home any of her 15 rivals in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas 11 days later.
On this day 12 months ago she was fourth to Samaready in the Blue Diamond Prelude and she will be shooting for her second stakes win following her Listed success at Flemington on September 8 last spring.
The other three single-figure fancies in the markets are then:
- #1 Darlington Abbey ($8) – Simon Miller’s visiting Stratum filly travels over from Perth after her very competitive spring – summer season at home which included a close third when beaten just over half a length by Academus in the Group 2 WA Guineas (1600m)
- #5 Summer Gem ($8) – Nice gate four draw for Michael Kent’s Elusive Quality filly as they vie for their third straight win, their most recent effort being at the track on Australia Day when ridden by Craig Williams who is replaced by Craig Newitt on Saturday
- #9 Later Gator ($9) – Resuming Gai Waterhouse-trained daughter of More Than Ready hasn’t raced since her 14th behind star stablemate Pierro in last year’s Golden Slipper, has been away for a long time so how they’ve come through the spell and matured will be interesting to see
Other notable chances at slightly longer odds then include progressive Holy Roman Emperor filly Octavia ($10) to be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy from barrier three, black type winner at Moonee Valley last Cox Plate Carnival Angelic Light ($11) and Craig Williams’ mount Balaclava Lady ($11) who resumes having last run on Melbourne Cup Day when fourth in Listed company over 1400m.
