Exciting 2013 Golden Slipper (1200m) hopeful Villa Verde is on track towards the $3 million juvenile race, showing positive signs in trackwork at home in Bendigo.
The flying filly will undergo most of her preparation in Bendigo before heading to Sydney for one lead-up run in the Group 2 2013 Reisling Stakes (1200m) on March 23.
Villa Verde has been working on the grass track at Bendigo a few times a week in the Sydney direction to prepare for the world’s richest two-year-old event.
Trainer Shaun Dwyer said the daughter of Not A Single Doubt looks “more like a colt” and has come back well from a brief spell in the paddock.
“She went out at 15 3/4 [hands] and she has come back at just a touch under 16 hands. That was terrific and she has thickened up a bit,” Dwyer told Sky Sports Radio.
Dwyer said Villa Verde will be given an 800m jump-out in late February before a further 1000m jump-out a fortnight before the Reisling.
“She will probably travel to Sydney eight to ten days before the Reisling,” he said.
The strong grey filly burst on to the scene in October to bolt home for a 1 1/2 length debut win in the Listed Debutants Stakes at Caulfield.
That performance left plenty talking but it was her next start in the Listed 7News Plate that really started she Slipper hype when she produced a dominant display of racing to win by three lengths.
Michael Rodd partnered the exciting youngster in the first two starts of her career and is expected to continue the association for her Golden Slipper campaign.
