Moody Duo Among 12-Mare Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes 2013 Field

Victoria’s head trainer Peter Moody will saddle-up two smart mares in the 2013 Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes which brings a crack nine-race CF Orr Stakes Day card to a close at Caulfield Racecourse this Saturday.

Koonoomoo will be out for another Group 3 win in the Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes this weekend

Due to jump as Caulfield Race 9 at 5:50pm (AEST) the $150,000 Group 3 Programmed Property Services Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) has drawn a final field of 12 hopefuls including two from ace horseman Moody.

Moody will be represented by There’s Only One in gate four with Daniel Stackhouse to ride and Never Forget in gate seven with the stable’s number one rider Luke Nolen engaged.

Both mares resume racing for the autumn and while first-up over the 1200m they might not be at their best, Moody is still expecting a good effort.

“The 1200 metres is probably short of their best, but late in the day it might suit swoopers and they’ll both be very strong late,” he said.

There’s Only One was last seen finishing a very close third in the Listed Winter Championship Final (1600m) at Flemington last July and so has been a long time away from racing, their first-up record however is very good and they are yet to finish out of the money when resuming.

Pins five-year-old Never Forget meanwhile hasn’t raced since May last year with her last effort being a disappointing 12th at Scone in an unsuitably short 1100m handicap.

Another trainer dually represented in the Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes field is then Robbie Griffiths with Bel Esprit four-year-old Vain Attraction and veteran Flying Spur seven-year-old Avionics.

The stablemates had mixed results in the barrier draw with Vain Attraction out wide in barrier 10 while Avionics has drawn mid-field with five.

To wear the number one saddlecloth in the Geoffrey Bellmaine this year is then Rod Grantley’s Dubleo mare Koonoomoo who is second-up for the season after a first-up fifth to Sea Lord in the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.

Before their break Koonoomoo scored a Group 3 victory for previously trainer Simon Vercoe at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival and Grantley is hoping they can get back to that form on Saturday.

Meanwhile there’s just one last-start winner in the mix this year with the Mick Price-trained daughter of Bel Esprit Loveyamadly (Dale Smith – barrier 9) who is out for their third win from as many starts this time in her latest being at this track on Australia Day.

Other notable hopefuls then include the Michael Moroney-trained Bonnie Mac who has come up trumps with barrier three, and Robert Smerdon’s Redoute’s Choice five-year-old Riviere who will get the inside running with gate three and Glen Boss aboard.
