Marseille Roulette Leads 2013 Blue Diamond Colts & Geldings Prelude Field

Gai Waterhouse’s Inglis Classic winner Marseille Roulette will lead out a small seven-horse field for this Saturday’s edition of the Blue Diamond Colts Prelude at Caulfield Racecourse looking to improve their Blue Diamond Stakes 2013 potential.

Gai Waterhouse's Marseille Roulette will wear the No. 1 saddlecloth in the BD Prelude on Saturday

Running as Race 3 at 2:00pm (AEST) the $150,000 Group 3 Patinack Farm Blue Diamond Prelude (Colts & Geldings) (1100m) is a major lead-up to the $1 million Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) back at the track on February 23 and is sure to impact the pre-field betting markets on the classic.

After winning the Inglis Classic over 1200m at Rosehill on debut on January 19, Waterhouse’s nicely-bred Zizou colt Marseille Roulette will back up in the Prelude wearing the No. 1 saddlecloth.

They overcame gate 12 of 14 to win the Inglis Classic and so will relish gate two, Craig Williams to replace Tommy Berry in the saddle, when they take on a smaller field this weekend.

Marseille Roulette is currently rated a $31 chance in the futures Blue Diamond Stakes odds which will certainly shorten if they win again on Saturday.

The shortest-priced of the Blue Diamond (C & G) Prelude acceptors in the markets for the big one at the end of the month meanwhile is Dissident from the stables of Peter Moody at $17.

Drawn in barrier four with Luke Nolen to ride, the Sebring colt debuted at Caulfield on Australia Day and enjoyed a nice win over a similar field in the Listed Blue Diamond Preview (1000m).

The most notable omission from Saturday’s race meanwhile is Moody’s Preview third placegetter Thermal Current, fourth fancy to win the Blue Diamond Stakes, who will go straight into the final without another run.

The next best fancied for the 2013 Blue Diamond Stakes are then Tony Vasil’s unraced Testa Rossa colt The Bowler who has the inside alley on Saturday and the Peter Snowden-trained son of Exceed And Excel Kuroshio.

Kuroshio has had three runs so far including a debut win in a Listed Flemington feature last October.

They were last seen finishing only a long neck away third to Dissident in the BD Preview, an effort they will be out to improve on when they step up in distance this time round.

Harvard Graduate, a $151 Blue Diamond chance, and Robbie Laing’s Direct Charge who is not nominated for the BD then round out the BD Prelude field.
