Fiveandahalfstar Heads 2013 Autumn Stakes Field

Victoria Derby winner Fiveandahalfstar heads a strong 10-horse field for the Group 2 2013 Autumn Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

The Anthony Cummings-trained gelding will be chasing a fourth consecutive victory after ending his spring campaign in terrific fashion.

After finally breaking his maiden status in the 13th start of his career in a midweek race at Canterbury on October 17, he then stepped up in class to Saturday company to win by three lengths at Rosehill.

Cummings nearly elected to skip the Derby but was thankful he catapulted him into Group 1 company as he stormed home for a 1 1/2 length win.

Out to exact revenge on Fiveandahalfstar will be Super Cool who finished in the Derby.

The Mark Kavanagh-trained gelding won the Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase during the spring by two lengths while ending New Zealand colt It’s A Dundeel’s unbeaten streak.

Another strong spring performer running first-up is Peter Gelagotis’ colt Hvasstan who won the Group 3 Norman Robinson Stakes and finished fourth in the Derby.

Red Inca is facing a step up in class but will be out to record back-to-back victories after winning at Flemington on January 19.

The Stratum gelding has won twice and scored two runner-up finishes from his five most recent starts.

Another last-start winner in the field is Peter Moody-trained colt Mulaazem who is also stepping up in class after bolting home over 1400m to win by three lengths at Cranbourne on January 18.

The emerging galloper created some buzz last year when winning a midweek race at Sandown by 10 lengths.

Others in the Autumn Stakes field include Darley colt Haussman and Mick Kent’s raw prospect High Shot.
