This Sunday the action of the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival continues with Hobart Cup Day, one of the meeting’s major support races being the Strutt Stakes 2013.
Set to run as Hobart Race 7, one event before the Group 3 Hobart Cup (2400m) takes centre stage, the $100,000 Listed PFD Foodservices Strutt Stakes (2100m) has drawn a final field of 13 three-year-old fillies.
It isn’t just the local fillies out for the black type either, a strong hand of six interstate raiders in the mix as well.
The top-rated filly of the field is from Victoria with the Anthony Freedman-trained Papillon, a $160,000 buy from the Williman Inglis Easter Yearling Sales, to wear the number one saddlecloth.
A daughter of Rock Of Gibraltar comes off a close win at Moonee Valley over the mile from February 1, her first victory since a winning effort on debut back in April of last year, and looks set to get the 2100m even though she rises significantly in distance.
She has however suffered an early blow drawing wide with gate 13 of 13, Glen Boss travelling over for the ride.
Other notable visitors from across the country include the Darren Weir-trained First Bloom from Ballarat on the rails with barrier one, and the David Hayes-trained duo of Green Roller and Global Balance.
Redoute’s Choice filly Global Balance scored her first turf triumph at career start number three last time out on January 13 overcome barrier 13 (of 13) to win over 2025m at Kyneton and looks one of the best at Sunday’s distance.
Another last-start winner in the Strutt Stakes on Sunday is then exciting Longford-based filly Settler’s Joy from the stables of Troy Blacker.
Due to jump from gate seven with Craig Newitt in the saddle the Tough Speed filly aced her competition last time out on January 23 at Launceston when she put an easy three lengths on Refuse To Lose in the Thousand Guineas.
The fillies that finished second third and fourth behind Settler’s Joy in the Thousand Guineas have also all been accepted to back up in the Strutt Stakes with Refuse To Lose (2nd), Gee Gees Snowhill (3rd) and Wise Investment (4th).
