Glamour colt Pierro was one of the stars of the Rosehill trials on Tuesday morning and gave every indication he is set to be a big player wherever his 2013 Autumn Racing Carnival targets lie.
It was the first time the Golden Slipper had been seen publicly since his third-place finish in the Cox Plate in October and he got through the 1030m hit-out comfortably in 1:03:2.
With Gai Waterhouse regular trackwork rider Mark Newnham aboard, Pierro was positioned outside the leader before cruising to a comfortable three-length victory.
The exact autumn schedule for Pierro is yet to be revealed but there has been talk he could run first-up in the Group 1 2013 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on March 9.
Other options that have been discussed as possibilities include the 2013 Rosehill Guineas and 2013 Randwick Guineas as well as the 2013 Doncaster Mile.
Pierro is one of the highest rated gallopers in the country after storming on to the scene with a scintillating two-year-old season.
He won the two-year-old triple crown which includes the Golden Slipper, the Sires’ Produce Stakes and the Champagne Stakes.
While he couldn’t quite replicate his perfect record as a three-year-old in the spring, he still won the first two starts of his campaign before running second to All Too Hard in the Caulfield Guineas and third in the Cox Plate.
Many racing fans will be hoping to see a rematch between All Too Hard and Pierro this spring.
There has been no talk from either camp about if and where that may happen but All Too Hard is set to kick off his campaign this weekend in the Group 1 2013 CF Orr Stakes.
