When unbeaten colt Philippi steps out in the Group 2 2013 Autumn Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday, he will be having the biggest race of his career.
But it won’t be his biggest race of the autumn.
Trainer Michael Kent is setting the bar high with the son of Host who could participate in the majority of the big three-year-old races at both the 2013 Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival and the 2013 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
Depending on how the emerging galloper performs this weekend, he could book a ticket into the Group 1 2013 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on March 2 before heading to Sydney to tackle the 2013 Randwick Guineas and 2013 Rosehill Guineas.
Kent deliberately kept Philippi to a light spring campaign with an eye to the future with the developing horse but he still did enough to suggest he could be a player in the top grade this autumn.
After winning a maiden by 2 1/2 lengths on debut at Mornington in late August, he scored city honours at Moonee Valley before stepping up to stakes grade to claim the Listed UCI Stakes.
The three-year-old had a positive trial on Monday, getting through a 1000m comfortably to finishing second to Miss Softhands.
Kent was happy with the workout and said Philippi is just where he wants him to be.
“The jockey was able to sit on him there today and not do much,” he told AAP.
Kent hasn’t completely ruled out the Group 1 2013 Australian Derby (2400m) for the exciting talent but believes he will be more suited to 1600-2000m races.
But the Cranbourne trainer should still have a Derby representative with High Chaparral colt High Shot.
