Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The Chipping Norton Stakes 2013 at Warwick Farm Racecourse next month is being considered as the first-up option for Peter Moody’s star galloper from last autumn Manighar.
The now seven-year-old imported Linamix grey backed up from a strong spring carnival in 2011 when bought to Melbourne while still prepared in Europe by Luca Cumani with a stellar autumn down under with Moody.
Manighar became the first horse in history to win the Group 1 Australian Cup – Ranvet Stakes – The BMW triple before their second in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes and third in the Doomben Cup in Brisbane during their three state autumn – winter assault.
Moody is now looking at a late autumn return for the $3.5 million earner who hasn’t raced since their disappointing sixth behind weight-for-age champion Ocean Park in the Underwood Stakes at Caulfield on September 22 which was one of just two runs for them last preparation.
Having earlier abandoned plans to defend the same Group 1 titles this time in, Moody now believes the $350,000 Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) March 9 could make a nice resuming run for Manighar who is likely to race exclusively in Sydney throughout the autumn carnival.
“I’m looking forward to getting him back on track,” Moody said.
“But I’m thinking a race like the Chipping Norton Stakes in Sydney might suit him best.”
Manighar displayed positive signs of being nearly up to race fitness when they had a soft trial over 800m at Caulfield on Tuesday morning where other notable runners including their 2013 Newmaket Handicap-bound stablemate Moment Of Change and last year’s Blue Diamond Stakes winner Samaready who will avoid a clash with ace mare Black Caviar this time in.
Barley A Moment gelding Moment Of Change was last seen winning their maiden Group 1 race at career start number nine in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes in Melbourne on September 30, an excellent result for the $50,000 yearling buy.
Injury saw their spring preparation cut short, however Moody is pleased with their progress and believes they can be competitive in a race like the $1 million Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on March 9.
“He’s a last start Group One winner and the Newmarket looks ideal first up,” Moddy said.
Moment Of Change is already one of the top fancies in the futures Newmarket Handicap odds occupying the fourth line of betting at a quote of $10.
