Geegees Blackflash made it known he will be a tough proposition in his title defence in the Group 3 2013 Hobart Cup (2400m) on Sunday after winning the winning the Jockey Club Cup (2200m) over the weekend.
Jockey Peter Mertens positioned the six-year-old towards the back of the field as Success Dostta set the pace up front.
At the top of the straight Geegees Blackflash remained at the back of the field before Mertens asked for an effort and he duly responded to quickly reel in his rivals and win by two lengths in front of Fieldmaster.
With the Hobart Cup increasing to 2400m from 2200m this year, trainer John Luttrell has had to alter the Clangalang gelding’s program.
He hasn’t been the consistent winner he was last year but Luttrell attributes that to the fact he has been competing in unsuitable races.
“He went good today, he had to win today for next week and his big goal,” Luttrell said.
“Today he got a bit of cover. In the bigger field, if we can get some cover, he’s got a great turn of foot and can put them away.”
A number of interstate contenders will travel to Australia’s most southern state to take on the locals and Luttrell is hoping to send them all home empty handed.
“There’s no one more fired up than me [for the race],” he said.
But it will be no easy task to go back to back in Tasmania’s biggest race, with the defending champion set to carry the topweight of 59.5kg.
Also high in the weights are Gai Waterhouse pair Kinnersley and Reuben Percival (59kg) while Australia Day Cup winner Shadows In The Sun has 58kg.
The final field and barrier draw for the Hobart Cup will be announced on Tuesday.
