Fiveandahalfstar Heads 2013 Autumn Stakes Nominations

Victoria Derby winner Fiveandahalfstar heads a quality group of horses nominated for the Group 2 2013 Autumn Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Fiveandahalfstar heads Autumn Stakes nominations

The Anthony Cummings-trained gelding will be chasing a fourth straight victory after finishing his spring campaign in terrific fashion.

But the distance could be a bit short for the son of Hotel Grand on Saturday, especially given the talent of his competition.

Among the challengers is Fastnet Rock gelding Super Cool who will be out to exact revenge on Fiveandahalfstar after finishing runner-up in the Derby.

The lightly-raced gelding has won two of six starts including ending It’s A Dundeel’s unbeaten streak in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase in late October.

Another strong spring performer set to make their return this weekend is Hvasstan. The Peter Gelagotis-trained colt won the Group 3 Norman Robinson Stakes during the spring and also finished fourth in the Derby.

Out to keep an unbeaten record alive will be Philippi who signalled plenty of potential when winning his first three starts including the Listed UCI Stakes in October.

Bart Cummings’ gelding Lunar Rise was another to show talent and consistency during the spring and finished his campaign with a win in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes and a second in the Group 2 Sandown Guineas.

One of the more interesting entrants is Lloyd Williams-owned colt Wales who has not been since April.

There has been some hype about the son of Redoute’s Choice who won his only start to date in the Listed Redoute’s Choice Stakes.

Others included in Autumn Stakes nominations are Peter Moody-trained colt Mulaazem, last-start winner Red Inca and Darley colt Haussmann.
