The race towards the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival’s feature juveniles’ race steps it up a notch this Saturday with Caulfield Racecourse hosting the two Blue Diamond Preludes 2013.
There will be a separately run $150,000 Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) for the fillies and then the colts and geldings before the open $1 million Group 1 Patinack Farm Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) back at the track on February 23.
Nominations for both the Preludes have also been extended until 10am (AEST) on Tuesday along with all the other CF Orr Stakes Day races at Caulfield this Saturday.
The Blue Diamond Colts & Geldings Prelude has currently drawn 12 hopefuls, all but five of which have had a previous race start.
Likely favourite in the mix is the Peter Moody-trained Thermal Current who is the shortest-priced male in the latest Blue Diamond Stakes odds paying $8.
The Exceed And Excel colt is yet to break their maiden status but did look good in their second-up third in the BD Preview on Australia Day, the extra 100m of Saturday’s race to work in their favour.
Moody is also represented by the Blue Diamond Colts & Geldings Preview winner Dissident, the Sebring colt rated a $17 chance in Blue Diamond Stakes betting.
Another undefeated youngster backing up from a successful debut is Gai Waterhouse’s nicely-bred Zizou colt Marseille Roulette who narrowly hung on to take out the Inglis Classic at Rosehill on January 19 from a wide barrier 12 of 14 draw.
The other more notable entries then include the Peter Snowden-trained Blue Diamond Preview runner-up Kuroshio who has had three starts so far also producing a win in the Listed Herald Sun Superracing Stakes during the spring and a third in the Listed Inglis Debutants Stakes, and More Than Ready colt Excitable Boy for Danny O’Brien who is out to improve on their sixth in the Preview.
It is the fillies’ edition of the Blue Diamond 2013 Prelude however that is likely to steal the show on the weekend with plenty of talent among the 11 early entries.
While current Blue Diamond Stakes favourite Miracles Of Life ($3.20), not currently nominated for the end-of-month classic, is missing from the mix the second pick in the Blue Diamond Odds Guelph ($6) is in the mix.
Snowden’s exciting Exceed And Excel filly debuted last October in Sydney with a second in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes before improving on the back of a four month spell to win the Vinery Plate (1000m) at Warwick Farm two Saturday’s back – Guelph in her first Melbourne start this weekend.
Another top fancy is then a stablemate to Guelph, New Approach filly Montsegur who is also yet to be entered for the Blue Diamond Stakes.
Montsegur entered Blue Diamond calculations with a big 3.5 length win at Caulfield on Boxing Day but failed to produce a similar performance in the Blue Diamond Fillies Preview when a disappointing sixth to the winner Miracles Of Life.
Of the others there’s also likely to be some fanfare for the David Hayes-trained duo of Blue Palace and Mount Zero who was fourth in the Blue Diamond Preview, while Mick Price has nominated for a trio of fillies – Drifting Cube the only one of those to have had a previous career start.
