Defending Champ Heads 2013 Hobart Cup Weights

Last year’s winner Geegees Blackflash heads the weights for Sunday week’s $225,000 Group 3 2013 Hobart Cup (2400m).

Shadows In The Sun

Shadows In The Sun is one of the top chances for Sunday week's Hobart Cup

The six-year-old has been asked to carry 59.5kg which is one kilogram more than he had when saluting in Tasmania’s biggest race last summer.

Also being asked to carry heavy imposts are Gai Waterhouse-trained pair Kinnersley and Reuben Percival who have both been allocated 59kg.

If both horses travel to Hobart they will take good form with them with Group 1 placegetter Reuben Percival coming off a third-place effort in the Australia Day Cup while Kinnersley was victorious in the Magic Millions Stayers Cup on January 12.

Anthony Cummings’ Group 1 winner Shadows In The Sun made an outstanding return to the winner’s circle in the Australia Day Cup, leading from start to finish to win by 2 1/2 lengths.

The five-year-old has been given 58kg, 0.5kg more than Gerald Ryan-trained veteran Ironstein and local hope The Cleaner.

The Cleaner has been a dominant force in Tasmania this summer, winning three of four starts. The only hiccup came in the Devonport Cup when he struggled to carry 60kg and finished in 10th position.

Devonport Cup winner Fieldmaster appears well weighted with 55kg after backing up his win to finish third to The Cleaner in the Summer Cup at Hobart on January 20.

Runner-up in the Summer Cup was Norsqui who has been assigned 56kg. The Walter McShane-trained gelding must be considered among the chances are proving his ability when winning the Mornington Cup last year.

Others featuring in Hobart Cup weights include Peter Moody’s consistent gelding Elusive King (54kg), Anthony Freedman-trained import Brehat (54kg), emerging Gai Waterhouse-trained galloper Power Broker (54kg) and Ballarat-based entire Hurdy Gurdy Man.
