Undefeated Grand Tycoon Leads 2013 Elwick 2YO Stakes Field

Barry Campbell’s flying local Spreyton-based juvenile Grand Tycoon will look to maintain their flawless race record this Sunday when they vie for their fifth win from as many starts in the Elwick 2YO Stakes 2013 at Hobart Racecourse.

The Written Tycoon gelding has had the perfect start to what connections hope will be a very prosperous career with a quartet of wins on the trot starting with a three length win on debut at Hobart last November.

Their most recent effort was a 1.5 length win over Geegees Velvet in a 2YO open handicap over 1100m at Launceston on January 16 and they are tipped to improve on that run when they start favourite in the $100,000 Listed Motors Elwick 2YO Stakes over the same distance this weekend from barrier three of eight.

There are only two other previous winners in the mix on Sunday with the Brendan McShane-trained Hard Spun filly Spinning Jenny (barrier five – Dwayne Dunn) who won their race debut on January 2 at Launceston, and One More Red.

Coming up trumps with barrier two, the Charlie Goggin & Luella Meaburn-trained Trotamondo filly One More Red was also a winner on debut two back on the synthetic track at Devonport before finishing a disappointing fifth on January 16 to Grand Tycoon in the Crystal Bowl.

The other horses with race experience are then the John Luttrell-trained Gee Gees Style on the rails in gate one, stablemate Geegees Velvet (barrier four) backing up from their second to Grand Tycoon on debut, and the well-tried Casino Prince filly Miss Elsa (third in the Crystal Bowl) who is yet to win a race in her six career starts.

Two unraced hopes then round out the Elwick 2YO Stakes field for 2013 with Commanding Star from John Sadler who will be ridden by Glen Boss from the far outside gate, and the David & Scott Brunton-trained Ritzy Bar with Michelle Payne in the saddle.

The full 2013 Elwick 2YO Stakes field, barriers, jockeys and weights are detailed below.
