Puissance De Lune Early 2013 Melbourne Cup Betting Pick

Darren Weir’s progressive five-year-old Puissance De Lune has opened top of the futures Melbourne Cup 2013 odds, the talented grey stayer favourite to win the world’s richest handicap this spring before nominations for the $6.2 million showdown have even been taken.

Puissance De Lune is favourite for the 2013 Melbourne Cup this spring

Running as Flemington Race 7 on the first Tuesday of November, the Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) is the highlight of the Australian racing calendar and always attracts a talented field of both local and overseas hopes.

Punters don’t have to wait until the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival commences to enjoy a bet on our most famous race however thanks to bookmaker.com.au releasing their ante-post Melbourne Cup betting markets.

Heading these early odds at a quote of $11 is imported Shamardal stallion Puissance De Lune who entered Melbourne Cup 2013 calculations last spring.

An eight length winner of the Bendigo Cup over 2400m in October Puissance De Lune backed up 10 days later and blew away a talented field of rivals to win the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) at Flemington on Emirates Stakes Day by an incredible five lengths.

There are then four other horses under $20 in the early Melbourne Cup markets with:

  • Sea Moon ($12) – English stayer prepared by Sir Michael Stoute is a Group 2 winner over 2400m in Britain, their most recent run a distant eighth in the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe but that was on a Heavy track from barrier 16 (of 18) expected to improve when up in distance again this season
  • Fiorente ($17) – Gai Waterhouse-trained import formerly in Stoute’s care, three length winner of the Goldsmiths Stakes last July and had their first run down under in the Melbourne Cup running an excellent second as a $30 roughie
  • Mount Athos ($17) – Luca Cumani-trained British galloper was in last year’s Melbourne Cup finishing a credible fifth beaten 3.5 lengths, last seen finishing a disappointing 12th in the Japan Cup when stepped back down to the 2400m
  • Michelangelo ($18) – Progressive Galileo stallion raced from Newmarket under John Gosden, caught the eye in September when third at Doncaster in the Group 1 St Leger Stakes over 2937m

Other notable chances at this very early stage of betting that could be worth a sneaky futures bet on for a big pay day come November then include another Waterhouse-trained import Carlton House ($21), the defending Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon ($21), and Alain de Royer Dupre’s Herber Power Stakes winner from last spring Shahwardi ($21) and winner of the race back in 2011

2013 Melbourne Cup nominations will be taken in early September which is when betting on the ‘race that stops a nation’ really starts to heat up.

Below are the top 20 chances in the current markets at bookmaker.com.au where new depositing customers are rewarded with a bonus bet matching their first investment dollar for dollar as a bonus bet valued up to a juicy $400!
