Peter Snowden’s possible Blue Diamond Stakes chance Metastasio has opened top of the odds for this Saturday’s Chairman’s Stakes 2013, the Street Cry filly having just her second career start.
Metastasio is not currently nominated for the $1 million Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) on February 23 but connections could be tempted to pay the $55,000 late entry if she blitzes her next assignment.
After an impressive 2.5 length win over fellow Saturday rival Kona Breeze in the Nursery Plate (1100m) at Flemington on January 19 Metastasio races again this weekend in the $120,000 Listed Chairman’s Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield Racecourse.
One of 12 two-year-olds, a number of which are also Blue Diamond-bound, engaged in the race Metastasio has opened favourite in the Chairman’s Stakes betting markets at a quote of $2.70.
Drawn nicely in barrier six with Darley’s head jockey Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle she is also high up the Blue Diamond Stakes odds at bookmaker.com.au paying $12.
Following closely on the second line of Chairman’s Stakes betting is then Politeness at $3.60, Glen Boss’s mount jumping from a favourable barrier two draw.
A $9.50 chance for the Blue Diamond at the end of the month, Robert Smerdon’s unraced Street Sense filly is looking to live up to the hype surrounding her as she debuts here.
In a relatively wide market there are then three other single-figure chances in the Chairman’s Stakes 2013 with:
- #3 I Am Titanium ($6) – David Hayes-trained Flying Spur colt debuted here in early December when second over 1100m, should have improved after a two month freshen up
- #11 Kona Breeze ($8) – Peter Moody’s promising Sebring filly has produced two second place finishes from as many starts so far most recently beaten 2.5 lengths by Metastasio in the Nursery Plate, needs to improve on that to be competitive here but Caulfield could suit better
- #1 Shamus Award ($8.50) – Wide barrier 11 draw to overcome for this Danny O’Brien-trained youngster who resumes off a short break, ran a good third at Moonee Valley during the spring n the Group 3 HKJC Maribyrnong Plate and has the blinkers coming off here
Other notable chances then include Hayes’ Nursery Plate third place-getter The Yowie ($13) and unraced Red Ransom colt More Rewarding ($17).
