One-time Caulfield Cup fancy Mawingo has a clean bill of health and is ready to tackle the 2013 Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival beginning with the Group 1 2013 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on February 9.
The German import announced himself as a Caulfield Cup contender during a strong winter campaign but failed to measure up in the spring.
He won the Group 1 Doomben Cup and placed in both the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes and the Group 2 Brisbane Cup but was unable to transfer that form to the bigger stage at the Spring Carnival.
Trainer Anthony Freedman sent him to the spelling paddock after he produced lacklustre performances in both the Makybe Diva Stakes and the Underwood Stakes.
Freedman attributes his poor spring showing to his short turnaround after the Brisbane Winter Carnival and is confident he can return to his best in Melbourne.
”We went fairly deep into the winter with him last year and after having just a short spell he didn’t come up but the signs are much better this time in,” Freedman said.
Freedman will wait and and see how Mawingo performs in the first-up test before determining the rest of his autumn program.
Depending on how he performs he could also contest the $1 million Group 1 2013 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on March 9.
Freedman has not ruled out a trip overseas with the son of Tertullian, highlighting the 2013 Singapore International Cup in May as an attractive option.
Prior to arriving in Australia Mawingo raced in Germany and Italy with his best result a win at Group 3 level in the Bavarian Classic in Munich in May 2011.
He currently occupies the fifth line of betting in the bookmaker.com.au Australian Cup market at $13.
Bookmaker.com.au have markets available for a number of the big autumn features and are a great place to back an autumn winner as they are currently offering a huge 400 bonus bet to customers who sign up quoting the code BONUSBET.
