Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Peter Snowden’s Australian Guineas bound three-year-old Albrecht will kick off their autumn campaign as the odds-on favourite in this Saturday’s Manfred Stakes 2013 at Caulfield Racecourse.
Running for the first time since September last year the Redoute’s Choice colt is best known for his extremely close second behind the fellow Snowden-trained Epaulette in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) which came on the back of their maiden black type victory in the Group 3 Up & Coming Stakes.
“To get to the level he got to last time was the sign of a talented horse in the making,” Darley’s Melbourne foreman Paul Snowden said.
“All he was lacking last time was some strength so obviously time has been a big factor with him.
“He’s come back a much stronger horse this preparation and hopefully he is a better horse for it.”
This season Albrecht, who impressed with a nice jumpout at Flemington last Friday, is heading towards another elite level target with connections eyeing off the $500,000 Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington March 2 and is currently rated a $12 chance for the classic with markets led by All Too Hard ($3.30).
On Saturday Albrecht runs first-up in the $120,000 Listed Manfred Stakes (1200m) and will face only six rivals following the early scratching of #3 Caitlin’s Spirit.
Having beaten better than this through the spring Albrecht is definitely the one to beat here and the markets reflect this with the favourite at a short quote of $1.85 and firming.
“Obviously this race will get him towards where he needs to be but I’m more that happy with where he is at the moment,” Snowden added.
Two of their challengers are also under $10 in the markets with the undefeated duo of the Greg Eurell-trained Hosting ($3.90) who won their race debut by a tidy 3.5 lengths at Mornington back in August over 1227m, and Peter Moody’s Had Spun gelding Royal Haunt ($4.80) who has won both of their starts to date most recently by 2.5 lengths at Sale on January 17 carrying 58kg to victory.
Sheer Talent ($13), on the rails with Michael Rodd to ride, is the only other hopefuls under $20 – Mark Kavanagh’s Redoute’s Choice colt last seen running a brave fifth when beaten just over a length by Lady Of Harrods in the Group 3 HDF McNeil Stakes (1200m) at this track and distance in early September.
